The $23 million Delmont Interchange was
opened to traffic on September
15, 2000 completing a two-year widening of one mile of U.S.
Route 22 and construction of a new Single Point Urban Interchange
(SPUI) at Route 22 and State Route 66 in Salem Township.
Approximately one mile of Route 66 also was improved.
Constructed
by Golden Triangle Construction, Inc., of Imperial, PA.,
the interchange was opened to traffic more than three months ahead
of schedule. Work began in early 1999. With
the new interchange, traffic on Route 22 is now moving on a modern
four-lane overpass. Vehicle flow on Route 66 - through traffic
as well as that entering the highway
from the Route 22 ramps - is regulated
by the interconnected signal system now in place.
"The
goal of the SPUI is to move cars and trucks through the interchange
in the most efficient manner," said Greg Bednar, PennDOT's
design project manager. "Plus, the
interchange design will greatly enhance
safety at this location."
