Section B01, the fifth of the nine projects to widen and improve
U.S. Route 22 in Westmoreland County, was completed in April 2005.
Under this $29.9 million contract, PennDOT Engineering District 12-0
and their contractor, Mascaro Contracting, widened approximately 2.8
miles of Route 22 from the Allegheny/Westmoreland county line to the
Cozy-Inn Cut-off.
Route 22 was widened
to provide six lanes of traffic from the Allegheny/Westmoreland
county line to Vincent Hall Road/Trafford Road. From Vincent
Hall Road/Trafford Road to just east of the Cozy Inn Cut-off, Route
22 was widened to four lanes with a median divider. Left-turn
lanes at intersections and jug-handles were constructed to allow
adequate turning movements within the corridor.
Context-sensitive design features, including decorative
streetlights, median plantings, and landscaping, were accomplished
through a funding partnership with the Municipality of Murrysville.
The bridge over Turtle Creek and the Turtle Creek Railroad was also
replaced as part of this project.
